What is an End-of-Life Doula?
Most people are unprepared for death – most don’t even want to talk about it – and still more don’t plan for it. End-of-Life Doulas, also known as “Death Doulas” believe that the dying process provides an opportunity for one to reflect, process difficult emotions and come to terms with their dying. We strive to normalize conversations around death and dying. As a society, we plan for other major life events such as births, birthday parties, graduations, weddings, etc. End-of-Life doulas believe that planning for one’s death should also come naturally. One of the greatest gifts you can give your loved ones is to talk openly about your wishes regarding end-of-life – and to be open to hearing theirs too. End-of-Life Doulas are trained, non-medical professionals that help you prepare – regardless of your current health status. We can work with those who are completely healthy, critically ill, or diagnosed with a terminal illness. We provide emotional, educational and spiritual guidance on numerous end-of-life matters. Pre-planning does not just include having Advance Directives, a Last Will and Testament or pre-planning a funeral. While all of those are important, and things an EOL Doula can assist with, we also go much deeper. We can help our clients to develop vigil plans, leave behind legacy gifts, create videos or journals to be left for loved ones, write their own obituary, plan a funeral or memorial service – even a living funeral celebration – and so much more. When working with a dying person, we are the calm person at the bedside. We are companions, listeners, witnesses and advocates. We provide respite to overwhelmed caregivers. We give referrals to outside resources as needed such as hospice, home health agencies, etc. We give people the opportunity to say the things they need to say. We prepare the dying and their families to say goodbye. After death we continue to provide grief support to family members and can assist in memorial services or rituals to help with the grieving process.
The end-of-life deserves as much beauty, care, and respect as the beginning.
