Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When do I need an End-of-Life Doula?

A: An EOL doula can be contacted at any time during the dying process, but the sooner they are involved the more they can do. Creating quality care plans, prioritizing end-of-life needs, completing legacy projects/life reviews, pre-planning death vigils, etc., are just a few of the many ways an EOL doula can help. It’s also beneficial to involve a doula early on so they can better get to know the dying person and their support people and vice-versa. This builds mutual trust and enables the work to be done to be especially thorough and meaningful.

Q: I'm not dying, can I still work with an EOL doula?

A: Yes! I love to meet with healthy people too! It’s never too early to create
your care plan, advance directives, pre-vigil plan, legacy work, etc. I would welcome the opportunity to help you prepare for your end-of-life so you can know that your wishes are available for your family members. This is a radical act of love that you are giving them – to relieve them of the burdens of having to “guess” what you would like.

Q: Do End-of-Life (EOL) doulas work with hospice?

A: Yes! Having an EOL doula is an added member to your hospice care team. We do not take the place of other support people. We are often the ones who refer a client to hospice when the time is appropriate.

Q: Are End-of-Life (EOL) doulas licensed or certified by the State?

A: No. However, when choosing an EOL doula, it is important to work with someone who has received training through a reputable organization. I completed a course of study through CareDoula® School of Accompanying the Dying. I received a certificate upon completion and am now a CareDoula® Certified End-of-Life Doula. CareDoula® School of Accompanying the Dying was created by Deanna Cochran, RN, in 2010. She holds the distinction of being the first to create a program in the United States to train and certify EOL doulas. She has worked as a hospice nurse for over 24 years.

Q: What if I can’t afford your services – does insurance pay?

A: Sadly, no, but please know I don’t want finances to be the reason someone does not have access to an EOL doula. Please reach out to me – I’m happy to work on a sliding scale.
